Since it was founded in 1219 by Archambaud VI, Viscount of Comborn, Glandier Charterhouse has seen many alterations. Occupied by Carthusian monks from the 13th century till the French Revolution, it was later the forge of Jean-Baptiste Pouch-Lafarge (of Lafarge Affair fame), becoming the property of the Carthusians once again from 1860 to 1904. It was bought in 1920 by the Préfecture of the département of Seine.
Since then, Le Glandier has become a sanatorium, then a preventorium, for children and women from Seine. By 1965, demand for places for children with tuberculosis had diminished, so it was decided to turn the preventorium into a Psychotherapy centre for semi-educable retarded children. On 5th January 1966, a first group of retarded children was received at Le Glandier, run by the département of Paris.
Fresh restructuring was needed to set up new facilities for the reception of handicapped adults.
